I. introduction

in this tutorial, we will see how to enable the management of contacts within ownCloud 9, then you will synchronize our contacts ownCloud with the Outlook mail client, through the “ Outlook Synchronizer CalDav “. The calendar could be synchronized with a nearly identical procedure.

Note: CalDav is an extension to the WebDAV protocol ( Calendaring Extensions to WebDAV ) for the synchronization of calendars, but also contacts, that will also be called “CardDav”.

To do this tutorial, I use ownCloud 9 on a NAS Asustor, an association which, by the way, works very well. I especially use it to synchronize some of my documents on my workstation through the sync ownCloud client. All secured by a certificate HTTPS made in Let’s Encrypt .

Let’s go back to our sheep… UH… Our contacts.

Note that this tutorial deals with Outlook, but this is quite possible with Thunderbird, with the declaration of a remote AddressBook or via activation of a SoGO connector: ownCloud over Thunderbird Contacts

II. Activate the “Contacts” app in ownCloud

as long as you’re connected to ownCloud, click on ‘Applications’ in high left then on “+ Applications”. You get in the store for apps, where in the “Productivity” category you will find the “Contacts” application. Click on “Activate”.

Go back to the applications menu, you should have “Contacts” now 🙂

I invite you directly click on “ parameters ” lower-left, because it is through this section that can be achieved an import of a file of contacts, or an export of contacts ownCloud. For example, for my part I exported my contacts from my Google account then I re-imported them in ownCloud.

It is worth noting that ownCloud supports only contacts vCard files, the other CSV formats are not supported to date. I also stated that user ownCloud account, you can have multiple address books.

The list of contacts is displayed in the center of the window on the right a visualization of the plug contact selected.

This is also the form that allows you to add a new contact. There are a good number of proposed including custom fields, such as address, birthday, links to the profiles on the social networks, web site, etc… Even the date of death, even if it is suddenly much less joyful.

On the left side of the window are displayed as groups of contacts, it is possible to add a contact in several groups:

now go to the Outlook of this tutorial part to implement synchronization.

III. setting up Outlook with CalDav

first download “ Outlook Synchronizer CalDav ” and install it, it’s very simple. Then restart Outlook if it was launched to load the module. In the tab “ CalDav Synchronizer ” click on “ Synchronization Profiles “.

Click on the “+” to add a profile and select “NextCloud” as the type.

It is how we end up with the crucial part of the configuration. Start by defining a “ Outlook folder ” which is the place where to store contacts, if you choose the “Contacts” folder they will be directly accessible in section “Contacts” of Outlook.

Now, the DAV URL is the web address of your address book, with which we can retrieve the info there based on WebDAV.

The DAV URL looks like: https:///remote.php/dav/addressbooks/users/admin/FlorianBurnel/

Je you advise to put “https:///remote.php/dav/” then back your login, password, then click on “Test or discover settings” If your settings are good, a window will appear to allow you to select your address book] , and then in the aftermath the connectivity will be checked (and adjusted the DAV URL).

By default, synchronize both ways, that is, changes to contacts in Outlook are synchronized on ownCloud and vice versa. You can opt for a unidirectional mode if you wish by changing the “ Synchronization Mode “.

As soon as the Conference is ready, run an initial synchronization by clicking “Synchronize now” tab of the module, and then you see your contacts:

this tutorial is finished, I hope find it you useful, and feel free to use this Outlook plug-in to sync contacts from other applications. Enjoy.
