Camera black Asian VS camera v2.1 Raspberry: test outside [Exclusive Guide]
camera 8MP black v2.1 for Raspberry Pi for been emulated among Asian manufacturers (as usual you tell me). This camera is very good. It is built around a sensor Sony IMX219 8MP which also equips many smartphones. The Sony quality is paid as it takes very good quality, this camera is quite expensive ( £ 28 on Amazon ). For a dummy security camera transformation project and surveillance IP camera, so I decided to get myself a copy low-cost before start me.
the sensors (CCD or CMOS) are usually protected by an infrared filter to improve the quality of the image. For some applications, the night CCTV for example, one trick is to remove (or not to install during the manufacturing process) this filter. This allows the sensor to be more sensitive in low light. That’s why on merchant sites, often found the (abusive?) name of camera night vision.
for testing, so I bought the official official version 2.1 IR camera to be able to compare it to her Asian clone.
camera official v2.1 Raspberry
the camera official v2.1 black comes in a soft box. The camera is slipped into an electrostatic sleeve. Protection is simply achieved by the packaging. An envelope cardboard in the case of Amazon. The box arrived a little flattened but inconsequential to the material. The delivery time is only a few days.
you can find number pack comprising a black camera with Led lighting for about €17 (shipping included) . Allow 2-3 weeks (minimum) for delivery. The pack is very well packed in a first card. A first card contains the camera as well as the flat cable 15 cm long. A second carton contains 2 red Led lighting with the cap screws.
Asian cameras are usually made around the sensor CMOS of OmniVision OV5647 . It is the same that was used for the first generation of camera of the Raspberry. They are limited to 5MP and can produce a video streams up to 1080 at 30 frames per second. All depends on your application, but for video surveillance, it’s good enough. Here are some technical features to compare the different models.

the cameras have an adjustable optical. In the case of the Raspberry v2.1 camera, you must use the white ring supplied with the kit.
for the kit Chinese perspective is more classic. It is also less compact, but it’s is not a problem because it is intended to be used with additional Led lighting. We live, or we quote to sharpness. The received kit was well adjusted (chance?).
now in trials. I don’t have the pretension nor the tools to make snapshots of laboratory, but at least you will be able to compare the rendering of the same scene taken at a few minutes apart.
test outside of day
the first photo was taken with the OV5647 Chinese camera sensor. The original image is 2592 × 1944 pixels (as expected). Rendering a very bland but the scene does not have very contrasting elements. We’re actually quite close the rendering obtained by Raspi.tv in 2013.
the same scene this time with the Raspberry black official (Sony IMX219 sensor) camera. The picture is more contrasted and detailed because of the 8MP sensor. The resulting image is 3280 × 2464 pixels.
night outdoor tests
now for the serious stuff and see what we can expect at night. Let’s start with the OV5647 with additional lighting. We can distinguish the bushes (located about 15 meters) and the hedge (about 30 meters). The image contains a lot of noise. Remains to be seen if the detection of movement (for example with Motion) will be functional.
now, the turn to the v2.1 black camera that does not have a light. You might expect, we can’t see anything on the image produced.
a little disappointed with the results (though expected), I realized a try indoors this time with the OV5647 camera equipped with LED lighting. The result is surprising. We understand the interest to remove the IR filter. The image is really well suited for night surveillance video use. Missing just a little sharpness setting.
however without lighting additional, unnecessary to make the first trial run with the Raspberry v2.1 camera. Stay tuned with additional lighting.
the official v2.1 IR camera is built around a high quality Sony sensor. It is very compact (9mm thick) allowing you to easily integrate it into your projects. The sharpness can be adjusted using a ring (included in the pack).
compatible with the Raspberry Pi Asian cameras are still manufactured over a 5MP Omnivision 5647 sensor (the same that was used in the first generation of camera Raspberry). It gives satisfactory results for applications that do not require exceptional image quality, such as monitoring.
in both cases, impossible in the State hope to build a system of video surveillance of the State outside. It will necessarily add a Led Spotlight more powerful than the 2 small Leds. On the other hand, they will do wonders for indoor use.
